About Aaron Hawkins.

Aaron Hawkins is standing for Dunedin City Council to offer experienced, independent leadership at a time when the city faces significant change and pressure on local democracy.

With nine years of service on the Dunedin City Council from 2013 to 2022, including three years as Mayor, Aaron brings a deep understanding of how council works, how decisions are made, and how to stand up for the long-term interests of the city. He is ready to contribute from day one.

During his time on council and as Mayor, Aaron was involved in navigating complex challenges, balancing competing priorities, and representing Dunedin nationally. That experience is especially important now, as councils respond to central government reforms, financial pressures, and growing social and environmental needs.

Since leaving office, Aaron has continued working in roles focused on community wellbeing and practical solutions. He leads the Otago Housing Alliance, advocating for fairer and more effective housing outcomes; the Director of Inspiring Communities, supporting community-led initiatives across Aotearoa; and co-founder of a small ecotourism business in Porirua, grounded in sustainability and local connection.

These roles reflect a continued commitment to people, place, and long-term thinking.

Aaron believes the long-term interests of the city are not served by short-term thinking or the politics of austerity. Whether the challenge is housing, climate change, or social division, the strongest responses are grounded in community, cooperation, and collective action.

He is standing to help ensure Dunedin continues to plan responsibly, look after its people, and make decisions that will stand the test of time.

He prioritises building strong, resilient communities, protecting and enhancing Dunedin’s natural environment, and strengthening relationships with mana whenua and Māori based on respect and partnership.
